Our stone grinding machine allows us to provide unmatched service quality. Our machine uses a combination of ceramic and diamond stones to ensure the best possible ski base grind. The ceramic stone creates a flat surface, while the diamond stone ensures unmatched precision and a smooth finish.
We’ve recently invested in the most modern and advanced Nordic-only ski grinder on the market, straight from Italy!
We are spending hours researching and testing on snow with top companies and teams worldwide to ensure we create the fastest structures for you!
Base grinding skis is the process of removing a small amount of material from the base of the ski. This is an essential step in preparing your skis for the winter season. Even if your skis have been sitting in storage, they will still benefit from a base grinding service. The heat from the stone grinding machine can also help to open the pores of the base of the ski.
Our service begins with an initial assessment of your skis. We’ll take a look at the current condition of your skis and discuss your specific needs and preferences. Whether you’re looking to optimize performance, or simply looking to maximize the lifespan of your skis, our expert technicians will be able to recommend the best course of action.
Our base grinding skis service follows a meticulous process to ensure the best results. We’ll start by preparing your skis for the base grinding process. This involves cleaning the base of the ski to remove any dirt or debris that could damage the stone grinding machine.
Next, we’ll move on to the grinding phase. Our machine will be set to the perfect temperature to ensure that the base of the ski is not damaged during the grinding process. Our technician will carefully feed the ski into the machine, monitoring the process to ensure that the perfect amount of material is removed from the base of the ski.
Once the initial grinding is complete, we’ll move on to the finishing phase. This involves using a smaller stone to add structure to the base of the ski. Adding structure to the base of the ski is essential for maximizing performance. The structure helps to disperse water as you ski, reducing the amount of friction between your skis and the snow.
Finally, although optional, we highly recommend this last phase to nourish your skis' base. In this phase, a hard layer of wax is applied with a low iron temperature to condition the base for hard waxes. Our hardening wax scrapes off similarly to green wax, preparing the skis for racing waxes and higher iron temperatures. This method minimizes the risk of burning new base material and improves the initial speed of all skis. We suggest hardening the skis after stone grinding to recondition the base material, ensuring maximum durability and speed for future wax applications.
With the winter season right around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about preparing your skis for the snow. At Winthrop Mountain Sports, we make it easy to ensure that your skis are in the best possible condition for your next ski trip. Our base grinding skis service is the perfect way to optimize the performance of your skis and ensure that they’ll last you for many more seasons.

After grinding, skis should be wax-saturated and "hardened" for better speed and durability. We offer these post-grind treatments:
Heatbox Saturation (HB – $35): The heatbox quickly saturates the base with wax, conditioning it for future layers. If you prefer not to use the heatbox, you can achieve similar results with 4-6 standard wax applications.
Base Hardening (BH– $20): Hardening enhances the base's surface for speed by carefully heating it with wax, using specific waxes and temperatures based on the ski's intended conditions. This process ensures the skis are prepped for optimal performance.
